The Centres’ creation became a result of two successful projects that were implemented by the community organizations “Yunist” [Adolescence] in the village of Lazarivka and “Molodist” [Youth] in the village of Morozivka in Brusyliv District in Zhytomyr Region. The two organizations have been cooperating with the UNDP-led Chornobyl Recovery and Development Programme (CRDP) since 2005.
The Centres offer educational, sports and other opportunities to the local youth, promoting healthy lifestyle among the village residents and beyond. Specifically, the young visitors will have a chance to go in for sport, attend computer classes, practice choreography and other courses, etc. It is expected that the Centres will serve over 1,000 people.
Mr. Igor Orlov, Deputy Head of Zhytomyr Regional State Administration, Mr. Vyacheslav Deyneko, Head of Brusyliv District State Administration, Mr. Volodymyr Habenets, Head of Brusyliv District Council and Mr. Yugesh Pradhanang, CRDP/UNDP Community Development Specialist attended the opening ceremony, which was dedicated to the 21st commemoration anniversary of Chornobyl disaster.
Speaking at the ceremonies, Mr. Orlov especially stressed that the creation of two youth centres was a concrete example how the local community organizations could act on their own initiative for the sake of local development. “These youth centres, I have visited for the first time, can serve as an example not only for other villages across Brusyliv district, but also can be replicated across the whole Zhytomyr region,” he added.
The implemented projects indicated a remarkably successful multi-lateral cooperation between different stakeholders such as community organizations, private sponsors, local authorities and international organizations. This partnership contributes to the overall socio-economic recovery of Chornobyl-affected communities and generates opportunities for strengthening civil society in the regions of Ukraine.
CRDP operates in 17 districts in the four regions in Ukraine - Kyiv,
Zhytomyr, Chernihiv and Rivne - which were hit by Chornobyl worst of all. Many affected communities, resettled from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone back in 1986, are living in Brusyliv district.
